Fatigue is usually what shows up first, though by the time most people actually get tested, it’s rarely the only symptom left. Diet genuinely helps, both for prevention and for supporting recovery, but on its own it usually isn’t enough once anemia has already set in.

Iron from animal sources, known as heme iron, absorbs far more efficiently than iron from plants, or non heme iron. Red meat, poultry, and fish sit at the top of that list. Yes, and this is one area where the guidance has moved on quite a bit from the ferrous sulfate tablets most people still get handed as a first prescription.

Iron bisglycinate, a chelated form of iron, causes noticeably less gastrointestinal irritation than traditional ferrous salts while still delivering comparable absorption.
