In initial phase, four medications are used for up to 2 months i.e., Isoniazid, rifampicin, pyrazinamide and ethambutol. The purpose of concurrent use of 4 drugs during the initial phase is to reduce bacterial population as soon as possible and to prevent drug resistant bacteria.
